I tried all of the poker rooms and by far, pokerroom's game is the best in the terms of a quality app to play poker.
You can play using a java app, or a download. I suggest the download as that gives you some additional features including rating players and the ability to take and save notes on players. No money is required, and you can play forever with just play money.
If you want to duplicate the play you normally see on TV, after you get your gaming running, you will want to click on Tournaments on the upper right, and then Sit & Go Play down on the game type selection. Once there, pick a game - make sure to pick one marked NL (no limit).
You can buy in on the $500 or $100 game and away you go. If you want to play with a group of friends, you can even create a private tournament table just for them, defining any game you want to play.
I play with play money, pokerroom does allow you to play for real money - but that is up to you. They do play satellite games for the world series of poker, tempted to try that once...

I also do not know the restrictions and rules for players signing up, please check their site and your local laws for more info. I am just merely point to place to play free poker with play money.
